Smoking Jacket For the Polite Smoker

In the photo above there is a picture of an innovative jacket designed for the polite smoker by Fiona Carswell, a recent graduate of the Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP) at NYU.

The Smoking Jacket allows a smoker to blow cigarette smoke into a valve in the collar of the jacket instead of someone's face. The smoke goes down into a pair of transparent plastic lungs built into the jacket. Over time these built in lungs become stained and visible to the world as well as the wearer. The more a smoker blows into the lungs the darker they become.

"This project was a result of exploring reflective design as it relates to the body, behavioral choices, and information displays," Fiona explains on her website.

Fiona Carswell is also the designer of wearable Body Marks (moles, scars, birthmarks), the Clutch Gloves, and the Malignant Mole Bikini. The wearable Body Marks can be worn on top of clothes. The Clutch Gloves require two people to hold hands in order to keep their hands warm. The Malignant Mole Bikini grows moles when exposed to UV sunlight. amazing

this is really cool.

Not exactly a hip fashion item

But this jacket definitely is an original piece. I don't know how many people will actually wear it but it does make a pretty graphic and valid point.

Kudos to fashion statements!

Nice dream

I doubt there are enough post modern minded smokers who would want to see how stained they are making their lungs look to make this really catch on. Fun idea though -- fits in well with the designer's previous work, probably has kind of the same clientele.

Fascinating!

Myra Per-Lee's picture

This reminds me of the inventions of the year 2020 from Philips. Lots of ways we will be reflecting our thoughts, actions, and feelings to those around us. I wonder how they will change us???

Cool invention!

Good idea, Bad idea!

It's a good idea, but.... I doubt any smoker will wear it!
