Off The Wall Fruit

Not enough room in your frig crisper? No space on the counter? Well, one alternative for fruit storage is your kitchen wall! The fruit in the "Still Life," by Umamy Design Group, is so tempting, it says, "Go ahead! Take me off the wall."

Fruit should be stored in single layers, so keeping it in crispers or fruit bowls isn't the best alternative, unless the fruit is turned regularly. I have a nice mesh fruit bowl mounted about an inch off the base, so the fruit can breathe, but I hardly ever remember to turn the fruit, so the fruit on the bottom of the bowl usually rots from the proximity of the fruit above. The same tends to happen in mesh hanging baskets.

Also, did you know that it's important to store fruit and vegetables separately? Most fruit (including tomatoes) release too much ethylene gas to keep surrounding vegetables fresh, as vegetables have a low tolerance for ethylene. (See lists of high and low ethylene producing foods.) Therefore, storing fruit in crispers is not advisable even if you have enough space.

I like the "Still Life" concept. It's got style, it's functional, it's a space saver, and it invites yout to take the fruit off the wall and eat it! Still Life will join other modern storage units that attempt to use all available space in proportionally small kitchens. But all kitchens seem to be too small for a cook!
