After looking over all of the entries for the "Tame the Name" contest, Pontiac has finally decided on a name for their new Sports Truck. "Tame the Name" brought in over 18,000 entries from all over the globe but in the end they decided to keep it as simple as possible.
No, it isn't "El Camino," despite the fact that it was one of the more popular entries. The new sport truck has been dubbed the Pontiac G8 ST. Pretty simple, huh? According to Craig Bierley, Buick/Pontiac/GMC product marketing director for cars and crossovers, "G8 ST was one of the most popular suggestions, plus we noticed a far broader trend toward simple, easy-to-remember names."
The ST will be based on the already popular Pontiac G8 GT. It will use the same 361 horsepower V8 connected to a 6-speed automatic gearbox. The engine will also come with the ever-popular cylinder shut off capability. According to Pontiac all of that is good for 3500lbs towing capacity or 1000lbs of cargo.
When not loaded down, the G8 ST is estimated to hit 60mph in about 5.4 seconds. It is expected to arrive at dealerships by the end of 2009 as a 2010 model. The price should be right in line with the G8 GT at $29,995.

Submitted on August 18th, 2008 by AnonymousQuestion: How is it that the amazingly creative name of "G8 ST" could have been "...one of the most popular suggestions..." when it was not possible to enter NUMBERS as part of a name idea on Pontiac's nifty "Tame The Name" website??? Hmmm?? Looks like they had the name already picked out. What an insult to the 18,000 people who entered the contest.
Are we in Canada? Pontiac didn't ever have an "El Camino"

Consumers these days require more cab space, more seating ability and more efficiency...3 strikes for the G8 ST so far.....
