Scientists from Israel have discovered how to genetically enhance the scent of flowers by a factor of 10. The method could also lead to "extra-tasty" fruits and vegetables, since smell is a key factor in determining taste.
(c) Roderick FarrugiaAs Alexander Vainstein of Hebrew University explained, usually the intensity of a flower's scent depends on factors such as the time of day, the plant's age, and the weather. The new method can enhance a flower's scent during both day and night.
The researchers have patented the process, and hope to use it to strengthen Israel's $200 million flower industry.
