Smartphone cameras just keep getting better and better.
But one thing that doesn't get better is stable video recording, mostly because it is difficult to hold the phone steady.
Using a tripod is an excellent solution here, but in the era of 1-minute videos, setting the whole thing up for such a short shoot doesn’t really make a lot of sense.
Now there is a compact smartphone stabilizer called SMOVE Mobile that makes it easier to record super smooth videos using your phone.
The SMOVE Mobile is a 3-axis gimbal that keeps your footage steady and smooth. It is one of the top stabilizers out there, used by enthusiasts and experts alike.
Although it can easily be used as a selfie stick, it is much, much more than that. With SMOVE, you can shoot above the crowd as you walk, make professional vlog videos, and make it look as if someone else shot you.
It’s a fantastic gadget for every YouTuber, photographer, and videographer out there.
First things first, the SMOVE Mobile is easy to charge. Simply plug it into a USB port on your computer or to its USB power adapter.
Once it is fully charged, take the mini tripod that’s included in the package, attach it to the SMOVE Mobile, and set it on your table.
It is important that you do this in order to properly balance it. Now, take your phone and place it in the device’s grip. Now, balance the phone in landscape orientation using the counterweight.
Next, it’s time to become familiar with the three buttons on the front panel. On top, you’ll see the ‘Power’ button.
Right below it is the ‘Mode’ and ‘Function’ button, while the ‘Record’ button (the one with the red dot) is at the bottom.
Press and hold the ‘Power’ button to power up your SMOVE Mobile.
Your device should power on and the gimbal motors should start working. You will see a blue indicator light if everything is working properly.
Now, pair your phone to the gimbal via Bluetooth and open your camera app. This allows you to use the buttons on the gimbal to control the video.
You can also use it on third-party apps such as Instagram. That means that you can post your content directly, instead of having to record with the native camera app and upload later.
There are two ways you can engage the portrait mode. You can flip the grip vertically, put your phone in it, and balance it for vertical use.
The second way is to tilt the gimbal handle forward (make sure that it’s parallel to the ground), hold down the trigger and press the mode/function button. This will automatically engage the portrait mode.
The SMOVE Mobile is packed with a long list of top-notch features, making it one of the best gimbals on the market.
There’s a wide range of options at your disposal. The device itself is fit for anyone who wants to make a smooth, steady video, be it a pro or an amateur photographer/videographer.
There are two main SMOVE stabilizer editions: SMOVE and SMOVE Mobile. The former comes with fewer features. The focus of this review will be on the SMOVE Mobile version.
The SMOVE Mobile has three different axes: tilt axis, roll axis, and pan axis. The tilt axis controls the forward tilt of your phone or GoPro device. The roll axis is in charge of your phone’s ‘roll.’ In other words, it controls whether it rolls to the right or to the left.
Finally, the pan axis connects the handle to the vertical arm and the rest of the device, ending with the smartphone holder. The pan axis controls the panning of your footage.
These three axes make sure that your phone or GoPro stay in the same position, regardless of how you choose to move the gimbal. However, they also respond to the commands on the handle that allow you to orient your recording device as you see fit. The 3-axis stabilizer is the SMOVE’s center-piece feature.
The regular SMOVE gimbal, on the other hand, uses a 2-axis stabilizer and doesn’t support GoPro devices.
At first glance, you may think that the handle is all you get. However, the SMOVE Mobile comes with a built-in extension. You can activate the extension by gently pulling it out to get a wider field of view.
While its extended, you can take better selfies and create higher quality content, making it seem as if you were being recorded by someone else, rather than yourself.
Naturally, you can use the mini tripod with the extension if you’d like to put it on the ground. This is great for tutorials and various other types of videos. Naturally, you can extend the device to any degree that you may like.
The SMOVE Mobile has three different balance modes. Here’s a word or two about each.
By default, the device is in ‘Pan Follow’ mode. In this mode, both tilt and roll axes are locked, while the pan axis follows. This means that whatever you do with the gimbal, the pan axis will be the only one that moves. The locked axes will prevent your phone from tilting and panning.
If you press the ‘Mode’ button once, you’ll enter the full lock mode, meaning that all three axes will remain locked. What this does is provide ultimate balance for your recording device. Whatever you do, the SMOVE Mobile will do everything it can to ensure that your recording device’s camera stays in place.
Press the ‘Mode’ button once again to enter the full follow mode. In this mode, the roll axis is locked, while pan and tilt axes follow. While in this mode, tilt the joystick right or left to activate the partial inception mode.
This will tilt your recording device. Press the trigger to go back to the default position. In full follow mode, you can hold the trigger to temporarily enter locked mode, described above. Release the trigger to return to full follow.
Another amazing addition to the list of the SMOVE Mobile’s features is the built-in power bank. It works great with Android phones, but you may have to get the Lightning adapter if you have an iPhone.
The proprietary SMOVE app gives you access to numerous additional features. You can use it to control the photography settings via the joystick button.
The settings will appear at the bottom of the screen. Some of the cool options include face tracking, object tracking, motion time lapse, panorama, time-lapse, and slow motion.
In this app, you can choose between three speed levels, set the tilt calibration for the gimbal, as well as set up the motion-lapse auto rotation settings.
On the right side of SMOVE’s handle, you’ll see the zoom slider. You can use this slider to zoom in and out, as well as create amazing vertigo shots (dolly zoom shots).
One customer said that their marketing team was more than happy with the device. They reported a delivery issue that was quickly fixed as soon as they reached out to SMOVE’s customer service.
The delivery was made on that same day. Having a fantastic product on the market is not enough; a fantastic team of employees and top-notch customer service are just as important.
Another fully satisfied customer said that they weren’t even aware that they could make videos that fantastic until they’ve ordered their SMOVE Mobile.
The device exceeded the customer’s expectations and they also reported fantastic communication with customer support. In fact, the customer service employees even recommended an adapter for the customer’s GoPro that worked like a charm.
This customer is a content creator that makes their content on the go. Content creators are probably the main target group of this type of devices. This particular customer records a lot of footage while moving.
They asserted that the SMOVE gimbal has helped them greatly. If you make a lot of video content on the move, the SMOVE can make your life much easier.
This customer has been using the SMOVE Mobile for 2+ years and it still works wonders. For this customer, it was the extension feature that sealed the deal.
Although the SMOVE has several competitors, none of them offer quality extensions. The customer said that the SMOVE was their favorite tool for vlogging, events, and everything else that includes video recording.
Before moving on with the review, it’s important to note that the SMOVE Mobile is the result of a successful Indiegogo campaign. The company raised over $2 million during the campaign
The SMOVE Mobile is a remarkable tool that is slowly and steadily going towards the top. With three modes that give you outstanding recording options, a built-in power bank, and mobile and GoPro support, it can give every gimbal out there a good run for its money.
As a rule of thumb, each order is processed the same day it’s placed and shipped on the next business day, depending on the selected shipping method. You can track your order via email.
Provided that you don’t use it as a power bank and that don’t turn it off, the SMOVE’s battery should last around 6 hours. If you use the device intermittently, you can expect the battery to last for several days.
Yes. As mentioned, the SMOVE gimbal features a built-in power bank that you can use to charge your phone while recording. This is a fantastic perk for longer recording sessions. It can also come in handy if you forget the charger at home.
SMOVE supports smartphones of all shapes and sizes, regardless of the operating system. However, the regular version does not support GoPro. Only the SMOVE Mobile will support GoPro. It can also work with many other action cameras.
The SMOVE uses brushless motors, which are essentially permanent magnets. These magnets rotate around a fixed armature, providing smoother movement and a more stable experience.
The SMOVE and the SMOVE Mobile are roughly the same size. Their dimensions are approximately 11” x 4” x 1”. This is when the extension feature isn’t activated.
The SMOVE and the SMOVE Mobile can be ordered only through the official SMOVE website and cost $159 and $299, respectively, without shipping.
